New Standard for Lean Operations

The Society of Automotive Engineers has issued an official standard for lean operation. The document, “Identification and Measurement of Best Practice in Implementation of Lean Operation” is called SAE J4000. The standard can be used as a yardstick for defining “lean” and measuring the lean status of your manufacturing operation. It also provides a method for comparing your operation with the most successful lean operation systems. Lean operations can save significant time and cost by eliminating waste in the value stream. SAE J4000 covers management/trust, people, information, supplier/organization/customer change, product and process flow. Measurable points of reference are included from 52 firms. In support of SAE J4000, a user manual on implementing lean operation (J4001) and a report with examples of best practices are available from the SAE site: <http://www.sae.org>.
