ISO 9004 Self-Assessment Guidelines

The new ISO/DIS 9004:2000 Guidelines document includes an appendix that can be used to assess your quality management system. This self-assessment methodology is intended to provide a simple, easy-to-use approach to determine the relative degree of maturity of your system and to identify areas for improvement.

Each major clause of ISO 9004 is evaluated for the quality management system and a score assigned from 1 (no formal system) to 5 (best-in-class performance). Guidance is given in the form of typical questions that should be asked during the self-assessment. Used regularly, this methodology can help evaluate the progress of your quality improvement efforts.

If you want to know where to invest your resources for improvement, the self-assessment may provide the necessary fact-based guidance. In addition, answering the questions may help your organization prepare for audits based on the new ISO 9001:2000 standard.
