Software Reuse

How do you reuse assets from a system and software life cycle? The answers can be found in IEEE 1517, “IEEE Standard for Information Technology System and Software Life Cycle Processes – Reuse Processes.” A new revision for this standard, the first since 1999, is now available.

IEEE 1517 provides a common framework for extending the system and software life cycle processes of IEEE 12207, “Standard for Information Technology – Software Life Cycle Processes.”

IEEE 1517 formalizes the process of reusing software by addressing the selection of the reusable units, databases, test procedures, or test data; the evaluation of code or test reusability; and the reporting of reuse information on new code, test procedures, or test data. It also specifies the processes, activities, and tasks to enable the identification, construction, maintenance, and management of assets.
