ISO/DIS 9000, Terms

The terms defined in ISO 9000:2005 were grouped into 10 categories: quality, management, organization, process and product, characteristics, conformity, documentation, examination, audit and measurement processes.

The draft ISO 9000:2015, Quality management systems – Fundamentals and vocabulary, has expanded the defined terms by nearly 75% and has revised the term categories as shown below:

3.1 Terms related to person or people

3.2 Terms related to organization

3.3 Terms related to activity

3.4 Terms related to system

3.5 Terms related to requirement

3.6 Terms related to process

3.7 Terms related to results

3.8 Terms related to data, information, and documents

3.9 Terms related to customer

3.10 Terms related to audit

3.11 Terms related to action

3.12 Terms related to characteristic

3.13 Terms related to determination

The concept diagrams are still displayed in ISO 9000, Annex A, but this time based on the new thirteen categories shown above.

ISO/DIS 9001:2015, Annex A.1

ISO/DIS 9001:2015, in Annex A.1, Structure and terminology, explains that the clause structure and terminology have been changed to improve alignment with other management systems standards.

Annex A.1 states that the new clause structure is intended to provide a coherent presentation of requirements, rather than be a model for documenting an organization’s policies, objectives, and processes. There is no requirement for the structure of an organization’s quality management system documentation to mirror that of the standard.

Also, there is no requirement for the terms used by an organization to be replaced by the terms used in the standard to specify requirements. Organizations can choose to use terms which suit their operations, e.g., records, documentation, or protocols, rather than “documented information”; and supplier, partner, or vendor, rather than “external provider”.

Further changes to the terms and definitions may be introduced in the FDIS version, as well as, the final published version of the ISO 9000:2015 standard.
