6.2 Quality Objectives and Planning to Achieve Them

Establish quality objectives at relevant functions, levels, and processes.

The quality objectives must be:

  • consistent with the quality policy;
  • measurable;
  • based on applicable requirements;
  • relevant to conformity of products and services and enhancement of customer satisfaction;
  • monitored;
  • communicated;
  • updated as appropriate.

Retain documented information on the quality objectives.


When planning how to achieve the quality objectives, determine:

  • what will be done;
  • what resources will be required;
  • who will be responsible;
  • when it will be completed;
  • how the results will be evaluated.


  • This clause replaces old clause 5.4.1 on quality objectives
  • Expands to set quality objectives for relevant processes
  • Relevant to products, services, and customer satisfaction
  • Must consider objectives for applicable requirements
  • Adds how to plan for achievement of quality objectives
