Description

This course explains how the process approach of ISO 9001:2008 is also the best way to conduct internal audits. Many organizations schedule and perform audits based on the ISO 9001:2008 clause structure. Auditing by clause instead of process defines an artificial scope. And, the plan-do-check-act structure ISO 9001:2008 means the audit of a single clause may not fully address the requirement, since the complete requirement may span multiple clauses.

Some organizations schedule their audits by department. Although an improvement over the clause-by-clause view, this type of audit is restricted by a scope that stops at the artificial boundaries of the functional area. For processes that span multiple departments, this scope limitation will cause auditors to not examine the critical interfaces and interactions between departments.

A better strategy is to schedule a combination of “horizontal” process audits and “vertical” department audits. Some systems may conform to the ISO 9001:2008 requirements, but remain fragmented and ineffective. Conducting audits using the process approach goes beyond auditing for conformity. These audits evaluate process results (effectiveness) and identify opportunities for improvement.

The course uses a process “turtle” diagram to convey the elements of a process: inputs, resources, methods, measures, and outputs. An “octopus” diagram is used to show how an organization must focus on its customer-oriented processes. Exercises are included on 1) how to develop a turtle diagram, 2) use it to develop a process checklist, and 3) use the checklist to interview the instructor.

Auditing with the process approach helps explain and promote the ISO 9001:2008 process approach to others in the organization. Update your auditors on how to perform more value-added audits. Shift the emphasis of your audit program from conformity to mprovement.
